About Burdock:
Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a biennial plant of the Asteraceae family which can reach up to 2 m. Popular names for burdock are: beggar’s buttons, bardana, burr seed, clot-bur, clothburr, cocklebur, cockle buttons, fox’s clote, great burr, happy major, hardock, hareburr. It is a widespread plant that can be found both in the plains and high hills. The flowers are purple-violet and are united in groups. Leaves are unmistakable – big oval – almost the entire edge is whole. Its root is straight and very deep, so a shovel is needed to take it the whole of it out. Once detached, the root is washed, let to dry slightly, then split in lengthwise strips in order to prevent moulding and not to break the grinding`s machine knives when it will be grind. These are dried in the sun and where strong air currents are present. Artificially, it is dried at a temperature of 35-50 degrees. The root contains a considerable amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, amino acids, polyphenols, having a sweet, mild, somehow earthy aroma, which resembles that of artichokes. Naturalists consider dried burdock as being a diuretic agent, diaphoretic and blood purifier. This is indicated in kidney disease, skin disorders (eczema, seborrhea), furunculosis, gout, rheumatism.
In cosmetics, burdock leaves are used as an infusion, against hair loss and facial masks are prepared from the fresh root. The plant was used to dye in black mixed with alder, dwarf elder and walnut. The tea made of burdock root helps to: purify the body, maintain a healthy skin, the proper functioning of the urinary tract. The tea has a purifying, diuretic and sudorific effect, stimulates the hepatobiliary function, bacteriostatic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and against skin infections. Helps in rheumatism, gout, cholecystitis, urinary infections, stomatitis, sores, dermatitis, acne, seborrhea, furunculosis. It is recommended as a treatment for diabetes, biliary calculus dyskinesia, renal disease. The burdock seeds can be used to prepare tinctures that fight chronic skin diseases. Its antiseptic properties recommend it as a treatment for eczema, old age brown spots or any skin or scalp irritation.
It regulates sebaceous glands, and for that reason tea, oil or capsules can be used daily to treat oily hair, acneic skin or excess dandruff. Massage the scalp in the evening, before going to sleep with a little oil diluted in water and let it on the whole night.
Experts recommend burdock tea to treat acne and chronic skin diseases. It is used for washing your face in the morning and evening.
For cleaning skin of pimples and blackheads, compresses of burdock root or hop cones applied directly on the area are effective as well.
