Product Details:
Melatonin is a hormone that is secreted in the human brain by the pineal gland. It is a substance that is present in the living world, in animals and plants, which has been discovered in 1917. This hormone synthesis occurs mainly in the dark, especially between 22 pm and 2 am. When the body relaxes and gets into deep sleep at midnight, the melatonin secretion is high, helping the regeneration of the brain. If you practice any activity during the night or if suffer from insomnia, the secretion of this hormone is very low, causing some psycho-emotional and endocrine imbalances.
The secretion of this natural anti-ageing substance begins three months after birth, then it starts decreasing after adolescence, and it decreases even more after the age of 40. Research has shown that melatonin has many beneficial effects on the body. It is one of the most powerful antioxidants ever discovered, with greater efficacy in fighting against free radicals than vitamin C, vitamin E or beta-carotene.
One of the most exciting new areas of research conducted on melatonin is the study of its effects on the immune system. The results highlight that melatonin increases the body’s ability to defend itself, by acting with the help of antigens and natural cytotoxic cells – cells that help fighting against disease.
Also, melatonin regulates the body’s biological clock, being thus helpful first of all for people who suffer from jet lag, as well as for those suffering from sleep disorders or insomnia. As a result of the body’s biological rhythm disturbance, the problem of businessmen and athletes traveling from one continent to the other is raised. It has a beneficial effect against certain types of cancer and it increases longevity.
Scientists have conducted a large number of studies on animals, emphasizing the positive action of melatonin against various types of cancer, Parkinson’s disease, in prolonging life expectancy (increased longevity), etc. In all cases, protection of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA is an important step. Its action has been studied in connection with cardiovascular diseases, immune disorders, sexual dysfunctions, depression, learning problems and some dementia issues. Melanin receptors appear to be important in learning and memory processes in mice.
There are published studies showing that melatonin has a positive influence against Alzheimer’s disease through its action of fighting against amyloid beta (a protein that causes neuronal death in the case of this disease).
Melatonin vs. migraine
In the last decade, a Brazilian study drew attention on the prophylactic and therapeutic potential of melatonin in migraines. This decreases the frequency of migraine and the intensity of the pain. There are many reasons that can explain this positive action of melatonin, starting from its anti-inflammatory effect, of neutralizing free radicals, reducing cytokine synthesis to its inhibiting the release of serotonin, and many others. Under these conditions, a promising future for the treatment of migraines with melatonin or other macrobiotic substances such as melatonin agonists, ramelteon and agomelatine is open.
