Product Details
Guarana, scientifically known as Paullinia cupana, is a tropical climbing plant that grows in the Amazon forests of Brazil. The name “guarana” comes from the word “warana”, that in the language of the Guarani tribe means “the eyes of the jungle”. It was discovered by German botanist CF Paullina in Brazil, in the 18th century. The Guarani people prepared teas and medicines from the dried fruits; consuming guarana was a mean of preventing malaria and dysentery, headaches, cramps or fever, and a good aphrodisiac. During the wars between tribes or hunters, the tribesmen chewed plant seeds to overcome fatigue and hunger. Nowadays, guarana is certainly the leader in consumer preferences at all ages in Brazil.
Guaranine, which is found in abundance in this plant, is a chemical compound similar to the caffeine in coffee or theine in tea, but it is neither addictive, nor toxic. Guarana is generally used as a stimulant. It has been used for centuries to tackle fatigue. It stimulates the central nervous system and the adrenal glands, it improves the cardiovascular function and glucose metabolism. It has been proved that guarana increases the feeling of satiety, it reduces uncontrollable appetite, it is effective during weight loss diets. It is of great help to people who perform intellectual work, to pupils and students during exams, as it contributes to the optimal brain functioning, and it improves concentration and memory. For athletes, these bioactive substances improve performance, physical strength and stamina. Clinical trials demonstrated that guarana enhances the brain’s cognitive performance and that it improves memory and attention. Clinical trials have also shown that due to its chemical structure, the absorption of guaranine is gradual, so that its tonic and invigorating effect is effective and lasting. Unlike coffee, guarana does not cause excitability or nervousness.
Other studies on rats have proved that guarana reduces platelet aggregation and inhibits the formation of thromboxanes, so it is useful for the prevention of intravascular thrombus formation. Some studies signal the antioxidant and antibacterial effects of guarana.
